Kinja'd!!!

Earlier this week, NBC released a series of commercials promoting their NASCAR coverage and featuring Nick Offerman, an actor in NBC's Parks & Recreation. It was a company man making a company ad for a company that propelled him to stardom; nothing unusual. However, one line in the ad, quoted below, has rattled the sensibilities of thousands.

When our idea of danger is eating gluten, there's trouble afoot.

This joke about the sudden spike of self-diagnosed gluten sensitivity has offended one man with a physician-diagnosed gastrointestinal disorder, a middle-aged white man self-styled as Gluten Dude. Mr. Dude has created a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to block the advertisement from the airwaves, and the petition has 13,918 at the time of this publication.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

But Mr. Dude is quick to remind us that this isn't about him or his commercial GlutenDude.com website. This is about the little people. Quoting the petition:

I think about all of the gluten-free children getting bullied for being "different", when all they want to do is feel better and fit in. I think about all of the people who have gotten sick at restaurants because the kitchen and/or the staff do not take us seriously. I think about all of those walking around undiagnosed and suffering because they only listen to what is in the media. I think about all of the people in the past who have died prematurely when going gluten-free MAY have been their saving grace.

Gluten Dude, who admits that GlutenDude.com is not "in the media," may have a point. Celiac Disease is an extremely serious condition that has been difficult to manage since farmers first grew cereal grains in Mesopotamia over 10,000 years ago. But you can't fault him pointing the self-diagnosed set towards as convenient a villain as NASCAR.

I think about all of the people in the past who have died prematurely when going gluten-free MAY have been their saving grace.

This part. This part right here is what smacks of the gluten-free cult's belief that wheat is an unmitigated and magical evil that cuts through a huge portion of the population. The seriousness of celiac does not excuse the wankery of popular affectation around gluten - that affectation has made things better for the choices of celiac folks, but they really should be wary of rolling in that brand of food-cultist as allies without reservation.

You know who grows wheat? Farmers.

You know where farmers live? Rural areas.

You know how rural people vote? Not like city people.

Checkmate, fundies.

My brother was diagnosed with Celiac disease decades before it became a 'cool' thing to have. He eats salads and meats and stuff because quote: "Anything marketed as gluten free tastes like shit".

I'll assume he's not signing the petition.

He's clearly not a fan of Parks & Rec, the Ron Swanson character or Nick Offerman.

Huh? It's extremely hard to diagnose Celiacs...Most of us took upwards of three negative results until it was finally diagnosed and it usually takes upwards of two Doctors over a course of potentially years.

And that's improvements made in the last decade to get to that point. My interpretation was he is talking about the thousands if not millions of people over the years who were in pain or suffering and didn't even know to get tested or gave up after the first initial rounds. That's not having anyone as an "ally" that's simply stating facts.

The drama he attaches to it - suffering, dying, etc. - to fire-harden his rhetoric against the bit, is very similar to that attached to gluten issues by those who have adopted gluten sensitivity as a vogue illness. Just as ADHD's vogue passed from a period of serious improvement in dealing with psychological issues to overdiagnosis, Munchausen-like absurdity, and difficulty in getting attention span problems dealt with properly, there are serious risks attached to "gluten sensitivity" as a fashionable thing to have, particularly for those whose issues are real. People with Celiac are in one camp, but there is another camp loudly shrieking such things as that some 70%+ (or whatever) have some issue with wheat, or other things with poor basis. Many things based on some idea that "the wheat is killing us", if you will, similar to fluoridated water types. In short, classic malingering indicates that those without any true medical issue scream the loudest, and there is a whole subculture based on that that it seemed he was trying to court. Adopting a po-face attitude with tear in eye about the poor children...

The gluten cult, who would appropriate Celiac to their own ends, are utterly and clearly what the ad is referring to - or more properly the fact that the gluten cult have so ruined sane discussion of the matter that the first thought for many on hearing of gluten troubles is to assume malingering. That in itself is horrific, but calling for heads over a cartoon curmudgeon stereotype saying a curmudgeonly (even if mistaken) thing should be fruitless.

One line, about (possible) dietary distress as a danger, contrasted with macho and stereotype manly sorts of dangers? Said by a macho stereotype? GlutenDude and his mob can fuck right off.

I understand that Celiac is a real disease and a very real problem, but the people that have it represent a tiny fraction of the total population of anti-gluten nutjobs.

I draw a distinction between the two groups. You can often tell the difference because people with Celiac disease go about their lives like normal people, while people who don't eat gluten just for the hell of it never stop talking about how they don't eat gluten. Shut up, I don't care. I don't tell you every day about how I don't eat kale, do I?

Why can't we all just get along? Going gluten-free has given me so much joy and attention. These 'Celiacs' as they call themselves [not sure why they do that, those with Celiacs Disease, would someone who has cirrhosis of the liver call themselves a 'cirrhosis'?] are just envious of of us Gluten-free folks because some so called 'medical doctor' did a biopsy which diagnosed them with Celiac disease.

Some of these Celiacs then gain weight once they go on a gluten free diet because they are not getting proper nutrition. Well, i am here to tell you that us without diagnosed Celiac disease don't need no medical doctor to tell us that we lost weight on a gluten free diet, and lost most of our friends due to being ostracized from society due to our annoying proclamations about gluten.

But...now that the NASCAR crowd has heard about the Gluten Free diet, it is time to move on. Maybe i will go old school and claim to have a Candida infections. That made me super annoying in the 90's.
